University of Tennessee hurler Monica Abbott has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week for the week of Mar. 13-19, the association announced Wednesday.

The junior from Salinas, Calif., went 3-0 during the week, all coming via shutout, and struck out 40 in 18 innings of work for the second-ranked Lady Vols. Two of her victories were consecutive no-hitters, the fifth of the season and 14th and 15th of her career, against 18th-ranked Auburn as the Lady Vols captured the SEC series.

Against Belmont on Tuesday she struck out 16 hitters to break the SEC’s career strikeout record that was previously held by LSU’s Britni Sneed.

Abbott hasn’t allowed a run in the past 50 and two-thirds innings, and she has thrown hitless softball the last 18 frames.

The outstanding week moved her to 16-0 on the season, with 216 strikeouts and 11 shutouts. With 1,401 career K’s, she moved into fifth on the NCAA’s all-time Division I strikeout list.
