PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – Rain held off for the majority of the day as the 2011 NFCA Junior College Leadoff Classic moved into bracket play at Frank Brown Park in Panama City Beach.
The weather only cut short the final two games of the day, however both reached the fifth inning and were declared official games.
Only four teams are left in the chase for the Gold Bracket championship crown after the quarterfinal round. Hometown heroes Gulf Coast pulled off the biggest upset of the day by ousting top-seeded Chipola, 9-1, in five innings.
Sophomore Colena Lazar was once again red-hot for Santa Fe, as she led the Saints into the semifinal on the back of her one-hitter against Odessa. Lazar allowed just one hit, while striking out 10 batters in the 2-0 win.
In the other two Gold Bracket quarterfinals, Blinn topped Florida St.-Jacksonville, 4-2, while Chattanooga State bested Tallahassee by the same score.
