STARKVILLE, Miss. - Championship weekend has arrived in the State of Texas. The Woodlands is one of four finalists competing for the Class 5A title. While the Highlanders are trying to close that deal, The Woodlands remain No. 1 in this week’s USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25, which was released Thursday by the Association.
In Friday’s semifinal round, The Woodlands (42-1) will face unranked Pearland (35-13), while No. 4 Plano (39-4) will face unranked O’Connor (33-4). The semifinal winners meet Saturday in a single game for the state championship. The Woodlands advanced to this round by taking two of three games in a regional final showdown with Tomball. Despite the first loss of 2011, the Highlanders still paced the national rankings for a 10th straight week.
The Top Five remains unchanged this week. No. 2 Canyon del Oro (Arizona, 34-1) is Class 4A, Division I state champion in Arizona. No. 3 Gulliver Prep (Florida, 30-2) is Class 3A state champion in Florida. No. 4 Plano remains alive in Texas, while No. 5 Kaukauna (Wisconsin, 22-0) keeps plugging away on a perfect regular season.
