Sabra McCune and Kaitlin Colosimo combined on a seven-hit shutout as SIU-Edwardsville defeated Cal State Stanislaus 1-0 at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship in Arkon, Ohio.

The Cougars (47-8) advance to face Lock Haven Saturday in a battle of undefeated teams, while the Warriors (50-19) will challenge Angelo State in an elimination contest Saturday.

“It was a nail-biter. We played with a lot of intensity and heart, and that’s what paid off for us,” SIUE head coach Sandy Montgomery said. “We got good pitching, and we scored in the first and that was the game.”

The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the first inning. Jodie Ohlau led off with a single to center field, one of three hits on Stanislaus starter Omaira Estremera (13-11). After stealing second, the next batter, Courtney Mall, doubled to right center to score Ohlau with what would be the winning run.

“We had a game plan to be aggressive,” Mall said. “She pitched inside, and I got my hands out. She had some great stuff, but I managed to get that clutch hit.”

McCune worked five and one-third innings, striking out three, and picked up the win to move to 18-5 on the year after working out of a couple of jams.

The Warriors stranded seven runners in the game, but five of those sat in scoring position.

“Omaira (Estremera) pitched a terrific game,” Warrior head coach Jan Schefkowicz said. “The story is not timely hitting. We hit the ball, but nothing was timely. Defense and pitching was good, but we didn’t get that key hit at the key time, and that is the game.”

Stanislaus put a runner at second with one out in the fourth, and McCune battled out of the jam. She preserved the lead again in the fifth as the Warriors got runners on first and second with one out. She battled and got a pop-out and fly-out to end the threat.

She was unable to work out of the sixth, however, when Stanislaus got a trio of singles to load the bases with one out.

Colosimo, a third team all-American, entered and got a fielder’s choice to the plate and a strikeout to preserve the 1-0 lead and earn her third save after striking out two over a perfect inning and two-thirds.

Gina LeGault led Stanislaus at the plate, going 2-for-3.
