Kristin Erb hurled a two-hit shutout as Lock Haven advanced in winner’s bracket play with a 2-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship in Salem, Va.
Despite giving up the pair of hits, only one Roadrunner managed to make second base. Erb, who moved to 34-1 on the season, struck out seven in the complete-game effort.
“I threw the game I threw all year,” Erb said. “I worked on spins and hitting my spots. I was trying to get ground ball outs. I was more relaxed out there tonight after pitching last night.”
The freshman all-American would get all the run support she would end up needing in the second inning. Sarah Norris, who went 2-for-3 with a sixth-inning home run and drove in a run while scoring twice, kicked off the inning with a single. Following a sacrifice by Julie Robitaille, Ilia Lopez laced a single that scored Norris from second base.
“Our team played great defense, got great pitching and timely hitting,” Kelley Green said. “We still have some things to work on, but we put ourselves in a great position. Kristin had a great game and stepped up big in a big game. We knew they were a solid team hitting. We wanted to continue to do what we did last night. We really wanted to clean up the defense and did a good job until the last inning.”
CSUB attempted to rally in the seventh as Rubio singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by Lady Eagle shortstop Courtney Hughes. Erb, however, retired the next three batters to seal the victory.
Melissa Wooldridge went the distance for Bakersfield, giving up both runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and four walks as she fell to 17-3 on the year.
Lock Haven moves to 54-4 on the season and advances to face Florida Southern in a winner’s bracket game Sunday at noon. The Roadrunners will play at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in an elimination contest against Georgia College & State.
