HOUSTON – Ferris State capitalized on a shutout pitching performance by Sarah Mueller, downing Francis Marion by a score of 2-0 in the second game of the Division II Softball Championship on Wednesday afternoon.
Ferris State (35-16) advances in the winners bracket to play St. Edward’s at 3 pm on Thursday while Francis Marion (38-15) falls into the losers bracket where they will face Barry at 10 am on Thursday.
Ferris State took an early lead plating a single run in the top of the third inning. A one-out single by pitcher Sarah Mueller opened the rally, which continued when catcher Krystle Bailey drew a walk. After a fielders choice got the lead runner out at third base for the second out of the inning, first baseman Amanda Jager connected on an RBI single to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Mueller pitched three perfect innings before a single by Shannan Tyson gave the Patriots their first baserunner of the game.
A fifth-inning two-out double by Jager led to a second run for Ferris State, as she was singled home by left fielder Holly Bruntjens to make the score 2-0 in Ferris State’s favor.
Offesnively, Mueller helped her own cause, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, while Jager also had a big day, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, and RBI and her 14th double of the season.
Mueller, who has now extended her scoreless innings streak to 43 consecutive innings, pitched a four strikeout, four-hit shutout for the Bulldogs and improves to 16-6 on the season with the victory. Michaela Wolf took the loss for Francis Marion, striking out six but allowing two runs on the day.
