STARKVILLE, Miss. – Junior utility player Kristyn Sandberg of Georgia has been named as the NFCA National Player of the Week for games played Apr. 4-10, 2011.
Sandberg played a key role in the Bulldogs’ sweep of then No. 18 Kentucky and provided a large part of their offense in the two losses to No. 9 Tennessee. She finished the week by going 9-for-13 with five doubles, two homeruns, three runs, eight RBI and two walks. Her weekly totals were equally as impressive as she batted .692, slugged 1.538, had an on-base percentage of .765 and did not commit an error in 32 chances in the field.
The Island Park, N.Y. tied two career highs on the week by tallying three hits in games versus Tennessee and Kentucky and driving in four runs against Kentucky. For the week, Sandberg safely reached base in 13 of 14 plate appearances and went for extra bases in seven of her nine hits.
For the season, Sandberg is hitting .311 with 18 RBI, eight doubles and six homeruns. The fourth-ranked Bulldogs are currently 35-6 overall and are third in the SEC with a league record of 11-5. This week, Sandberg and her Georgia teammates will travel the short distance to Atlanta on Wednesday to take on 23rd-ranked Georgia Tech before hosting Ole Miss in a weekend SEC series.

LSU’s Brittany Mack went 2-0 and struck out 25 in the Tigers’ sweep of then top-ranked Alabama… Jessica Davis of Illinois blasted four homeruns against Ohio State last week to finish the week with a .667 batting average and an astronomical slugging percentage of 2.111 … Troy’s Ashlyn Williams won three games and earned a save last week while allowing just one earned run and striking out 22… Lauren Klopp of San Diego State drove in 18 runs on seven hits, including five homeruns, while leading the Aztecs to a 5-0 week… Eastern Illinois’ Amber May held opponents to .187 batting average during a 4-0 week in which she notched her 500th career strikeout.
