STARKVILLE, Miss. – Infielder Montana Lucas of Grand Canyon and Allison Smith of Wingate have been named as the NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played April 4-10, 2011.
Lucas went-14-for-17 last week in a four-game sweep of Dominican (CA) that included 17 RBIs, eight runs, four home runs and three doubles. For the week, Lucas turned in a .824 batting average and on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of 1.706.
The Glendale, Ariz., native broke new ground for the Antelopes last week by setting two new school records in the series finale with Dominican. In Grand Canyon’s 25-9 win over the Penguins, Lucas tallied five hits and drove in nine runs, breaking the two previous records in those categories by one each.
For the year, Lucas is batting .370 and leads her team in both home runs and RBIs with seven and 33, respectively. The four games last week lifted Grand Canyon to a 17-18 overall record and a 9-7 record in the PacWest. The Antelopes will look to improve on their fifth place standing in the conference this week when they travel to Dixie State for a four-game set.
Smith earned the weekly pitching honor by picking up three wins and a save for the Bulldogs last week, with all three wins coming by way of complete game shutout. She ended the week with a 0.00 ERA and allowed 12 hits and three walks while striking out 20 and limiting her opponents to a .155 batting average.
The native of Danville, Va., struck out 18 in her three wins on the week and then entered her final game of the week with the bases loaded and no outs to earn her first save of the season. Of the 12 hits that Smith allowed on the week, only two of them went for extra bases and both were doubles.
Currently, Smith has an 18-5 record on the year to go along with a 1.35 ERA and 132 strikeouts. After going 4-0 in league play last week, Wingate is now 27-12 this season and 8-6 in the South Atlantic Conference, placing them fifth in the standings. This week, the Bulldogs will continue action in the SAC by traveling to Newberry and hosting Carson-Newman.
