STARKVILLE, Miss. – After almost 20 years of offering recruiting camps throughout the country, the NFCA announced on Monday that it will hold its first-ever recruiting tournament on Oct. 14-16 at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
This will be the Association’s first foray into travel ball recruiting tournaments after having produced highly successful recruiting camps since 1993 and college softball tournaments since 1996. Monday’s announcement comes after over 12 months of planning, research and asking both travel ball and college coaches what kind of recruiting tournaments they would like to attend. The yearlong project was headed up by NFCA Assistant Executive Director Jen Goodwin.
“Recruiting tournaments are the next natural step in the NFCA's role in the fastpitch community,” said the Association’s Executive Director Lacy Lee Baker. “Part of our mission is to provide our members with high-quality education and events throughout the year. We believe that these tournaments will not only offer travel ball coaches the opportunity to have their teams watched by some of the best college programs in the country, but it will also provide our member college coaches with the opportunity to recruit top players in an environment that they helped shape.”
The tournaments will be divided into two age groups, 16U and 18U, and will feature between 48 and 64 teams. Each team will receive a five-game guarantee that will consist of three pool play games on Friday and Saturday and two bracket games on Saturday and Sunday. At the conclusion of pool play on Saturday, teams will be placed in one of four brackets, either the Gold, Silver, Bronze or Copper.
There will be no charge for NFCA college coaches to attend the tournament and all NFCA members who pre-register will receive a showcase book that contains player information upon arrival no cost. Non-member NFCA coaches and those who did not pre-register can still obtain a book for the price of $25.
One unique aspect of the NFCA recruiting tournament will be the use of University Athlete recruiting software. Already a mainstay at volleyball recruiting tournaments, University Athlete and the NFCA will introduce softball coaches to UA’s easy-to-use and helpful software at this year’s event.
All college recruiters attending the tournament will be offered a free trial of the software, which is available for the iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Palm devices. The software will give coaches immediate access to player information, tournament rosters, game schedules, game field information and bracket updates. Along with information, the UA software also allows coaches to take notes without having to worry about keeping up with multiple sheets of paper.
