Kennesaw State won its eighth consecutive elimination game of the 2005 NCAA postseason, downing San Francisco State 4-3 at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship in Salem, Va.
Jennifer Hunt went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for the Owls, who advance to face the loser of Sunday’s Lynn-Northern Kentucky game. San Francisco State ends its season at 43-21.
The Owls jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead on Gator pitcher Holly Pearce, who was throwing her third consecutive game due to the injury of All-American Sonja Garnett. Hunt led off with a single and was scored on a home run by Keri McKee.
Pearce settled down, only allowing one more hit until the fifth, when Cambria McKay delivered an RBI single to score Hunt, who led off the inning with a single.
Kennesaw State had a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth, when Jordanna Freemer got the Gators on the board with an RBI single. Chrissy Hildebrandt tied the game at three runs with a two run shot to left center field.
With their backs to the wall once again, the Owls delivered in their last at-bat. With two outs, an injured Amy Middleton hit a pinch hit single, limping to first base. Courtney Matiak pinch ran, stole second and scored on Hunt’s RBI single to give Kennesaw a 4-3 advantage.
