Lynn University broke open a scoreless game with a five run fifth inning as the Fighting Knights cruised to a 5-0 victory over San Francisco State in a battle of tournament newcomers at the Division II national tournament in Salem, Va.
After leaving four runners stranded in the first four innings, Rachel Foster opened the fifth inning with a solo home run. After SFSU starter Sonja Garnett (30-9) answered with a strikeout of Danielle Fanucchi, the next five Lynn batters reached base.
Danielle Curoio began the attack with a double to right field that just narrowly missed being a home run. Jennie Scott then hit an infield single, followed by another single by All-American Christina Rolla.
All-American Tiffany King then stepped out of her slump and delivered a two RBI single to give the Knights a 3-0 lead. After Garnett walked Alex Acosta, the runners advanced on a passed ball and Lynn took a 4-0 lead. Garnett’s wild pitch allowed King to score before she was replaced by Holly Pearce, who finished the game for the Gators.
Lynn starter Aimee Murch (36-3) pitched a complete game, giving up just three hits and striking out 10 batters. Murch retired the last seven batters she faced.
