STARKVILLE, Miss. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced the three winners of the 2011 NJCAA Division II Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award on Wednesday.
2011 NJCAA Division II National Champion LSU-Eunice took home honors in the south region this yeat. Head Coach Andy Lee and assistant Brandi Alonzo guided the Bengals to the first national title in program history in just their seventh year as a collegiate team.
LSU-Eunice finished the 2011 campaign with a record of 58-10 and picked up the team’s first Region 23 title en route to the national crown. This year’s trip to the national tournament was on the second in the history of the program.
Mercyhurst North East’s coaches won the award in the east region this year. Head Coach Brian Dewey and assistant Ron Bretz lead the Saints to a 28-18 clip this season and an appearance in the national tournament.
To get to the national championship, Mercyhurst won its eighth WNYAC crown in the past 11 years and the first since 2009. After winning their conference crown the Saints then took home their third straight District I title to earn the right to play for the national title.
Rounding out this year’s honorees were the winners from the midwest, Kirkwood. Head coach Joe Yegge and assistants Bre Milnes and Nikki Price presided over the Eagles’ run to the national tournament this season.
Kirkwood went 54-11 in 2011 and made their first trip under Yegge to the national tournament. The Eagles also won the Region XI and the District F championships this season.
All three coaching staffs are now eligible for National Coaching Staff of the Year, which will be announced by the Association on June 13.
