STARKVILLE, Miss. – Senior Rainey Gaffin of Legacy High School in Broomfield, Co., has been named the MaxPreps High School Player of the Week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for games played through October 22, 2011.
Gaffin went 3-0 on the mound last week, including a 4-1 win over Brighton (Co.) to secure the Lightning's fifth straight Colorado Class 5A state championship. After giving up a solo home run in the 3rd inning, Gaffin shut down the Brighton offense, allowing only one hit in the final 3 1/2 innings. The senior leadoff hitter finished the season with a .593 average and a 1.314 slugging percentage, with 15 home runs, 47 RBI and 43 runs scored. In the circle, the right-hander finished her career going 20-2 with a 1.84 ERA, holding opponents to a .192 batting average while striking out 117 and walking only 37 in 127 innings pitched. The Lightning finished with a 25-2 overall record.

To nominate a player for the award, the coach must enter his or her athlete's game stats into MaxPreps.com by Sunday evening to be eligible for that week’s award. The NFCA High School Players of the Week, one for each high school region, will be announced by the Association on www.nfca.org every Monday during the spring season.
