STARKVILLE, Miss. – The final MaxPreps awards for the 2012 Spring season have been awarded to junior Alyssa Huntley of Utica Stevenson High School in Sterling Heights, Mich, and sophomore Steph Thomas of Immaculate Heart Academy in Washington Township, N.J.
In the North Region, Huntley helped lead Stevenson to the Division 1 regional championship. The junior pitcher led the Titans to a 6-0 victory over Fraser (Mich.), recording eight strikeouts, and picked up 10 more in a 7-0 win over Chippewa Valley (Mich.), to help lead Stevenson to the title. Huntley also helped herself out at the plate, tallying four hits on the day including a home run. So far this season she has a .78 ERA and 237 strikeouts in 197.2 innings. Stevenson is currently ranked #2 in the state of Michigan.
Representing the East Region, Thomas led Immaculate Heart Academy to their first undefeated season in program history with a 3-0 victory over St. John Vianney in the Non-Public A State Championship game. The win gave Immaculate Heart a 32-0 record, one shy of the state mark for wins in a season. Thomas kept St. John Vianney off-balance, limiting the Lancers to six hits and a walk while striking out three. The sophomore also had a base clearing single in the third inning. Thomas earned the second state championship title of the day for her family. Thomas' older sister, Ally, won the Group 2 state title with Pequannock in the game that preceded Immaculate Heart's on the same field. The sophmore finished the season with a .48 ERA and 202 strikeouts against only 19 walks in 173.2 innings pitched. The Eagles finished the season ranked #2 nationally and #1 in the state of New Jersey.
