STARKVILLE, Miss. – Senior Stephanie Sweat of Pottsville High School in Pottsville, Pa., and junior Jordyn Moquin of Southington High School in Southington, Conn., have been named as the High School Players of the Week for their respective regions by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for games played through June 4, 2012.
In the North Region, Sweat helped lead Pottsville to their first District 11 Class AAA crown since 2005. In the semi-final game against Saucon Valley (Pa.), the senior struck out 14 and walked just two in the 5-2 win. The win set up a date with defending champion Bethlehem Catholic in the finals. The senior right-hander held the Golden Hawks to just five hits while striking out 8, going the distance in the 10 inning, 5-1 victory. On the year Sweat owns a .84 ERA and has struck out 224 batters in 150 innings pitched. Pottsville for the PIAA Class AAA Tournament. The Crimson Tide improved to 23-2 and are currently ranked #1 in Pennsylvania.
Representing the East Region, Moquin helped Southington advance to their first Class LL championship game since 2004 with victories over Danbury (Conn.) and Masuk (Conn.). Against Masuk in the semi-final game, Moquin was dominate on the mound tossing five no-hit innings, and scattering 3 hits in her final two innings of work in the 5-1 win. The junior also helped her cause at the plate driving a two-run double to left-center in the fouth to put her team up 4-0. So far this year she has an ERA of .22 and has allowed only 7 extra-base hits in 126.2 innings pitched. Southington advances to face Amity in the championship game. The Lady Knights are 22-2 overall, and are currently ranked #7 in the state of Connecticut.
