COLUMBUS, Ga. – Following opening day action on Fri., March 8, at the South Commons Complex in Columbus, Ga., seven teams remain unbeaten at 2-0 and at the top of their respective pools: No. 3 UT-Tyler, No. 8 Illinois Wesleyan, No. 15 Pacific Lutheran, No. 21 St. Thomas (Minn.), tied-No. 25 East Texas Baptist, Claremont Mudd-Scripps and Fontbonne.

Third-rated UT-Tyler proved the most dominant of the undefeated squads by a razor-thin margin, as far as run differential went, topping Alma (6-2) and (tied for) No. 25 Washington University-St. Louis (4-0) in posting a +8 run differential.

Just behind the Patriots at a +7 differential was Claremont-Mudd Scripps as CMS upset No. 7 Christopher Newport (3-0) before topping DePauw (7-3).

Among the opening day’s surprises were 0-2 starts for No. 17 Ohio Northern (lost to No. 10 Central 3-4 & Piedmont 0-3), No. 22 Ithaca (lost to No. 9 Linfield 1-9 in 6 inn. & Fontbonne 5-6) and No. 23 SUNY Cortland (lost to No. 7 Christopher Newport 2-4 & DePauw 3-10). No. No. 9 Linfield (upset 1-2 by unranked Gustavus Adolphus), No. 10 Central (lost 2-3 in 9 inn. to tied-No. 25 East Texas Baptist) and No. 11 Trine (lost 11-12 to No. 8 Illinois Wesleyan) each suffered single defeats as part of their 1-1 opening days.

Teams will complete round-robin play in their seven, four-team pools on Saturday morning. Bracket action will begin on Saturday afternoon in Gold, Silver, Bronze and Copper brackets.

Tickets can be purchased at the South Commons Softball Complex with adult prices set at $25 for a full-event pass or $10 for a single-day admission.  Groups of 10 or more can enter the complex for just $5 each.
