HOUSTON -- A solo home run by St. Edward’s first baseman Stacy Giles proved to be enough for the Hilltoppers to send Ferris State to the losers bracket with a 1-0 victory.
St. Edward’s (53-15) advances to play on Friday at 3 pm CT against the winner of Game 9 (Francis Marion vs. the Humboldt State-Emporia State loser) while Ferris State (35-17) will face Lock Haven in an elimination game on Friday at 12:30 pm.
Once again, a pitchers duel kept the game scoreless through five full innings of play. In the top of the sixth, Ferris State loaded the bases on two hits and an error but the Bulldogs were unable to push a run across, leaving the game scoreless headed to the bottom of the sixth inning
In that frame, St. Edward’s first baseman Stacy Giles connected on her third home run of the season, sending the first pitch of the seventh inning from Holly Bruntjens over the fence in left center. The home run gave St. Edward’s a 1-0 lead and ended Bruntjen’s scoreless innings streak at 48 innings in the circle.
Bruntjens took the loss for Ferris State, striking out three and not allowing a walk while holding St. Edward’s to just three hits in the game. She falls to 15-9 on the season.
For St. Edward’s, relief pitcher Diana Cezeaux earned the win for the Hilltoppers, facing nine batters and allowing two hits in two innings in the circle. She is now 25-8 on the season. Starting pitcher Robin Becker pitched five innings and scattered four hits, striking out three.
