Rachele Vogelpohl scored two runs including a game-ending run on a perfect suicide squeeze bunt by Angie Lindeman as Northern Kentucky improved to 54-0 by defeating upset-minded LeMoyne 2-1 at the NCAA Division II Softball Championships in Salem, Va.
After Megan Owens grounded out to begin the bottom of the seventh, NKU delivered three consecutive singles to load the bases. Vogelpohl’s speed was complimented by Lindeman’s perfectly placed bunt and Sarah Reed’s throw to the plate was late.
LeMoyne struck first, plating a run in the top of the third inning when Kristen DesLauriers got caught in a rundown between first and second, allowing Emma Murphy to score the Dolphins’ lone run.
The Norse led off the bottom half of the third when Vogelpohl hit a towering home run that just cleared the fence in left field. NKU ace Krystal Lewallen (31-0) gave up just one hit from that point on to pick up the victory.
Reed (17-5) scattered eight hits in the game for LeMoyne, which will now face the loser of tonight’s Kennesaw State-St. Mary’s game in an elimination contest on Friday. NKU takes on the winner of that contest.
