Danielle Lawrie hurled a no-hitter in the opening game of the Women’s College World Series, and Eileen Canney almost followed suit as she had a no-hit bid broken up in the sixth as Northwestern knocked off Arizona State 2-0 Thursday afternoon in Oklahoma City.

Canney (32-9) struck out 11 and walked three as she tossed a complete-game shutout, her ninth of the season. Canney’s bid for back-to-back no-hitters was broken up on a bunt single by Michelle Smith in the sixth.

The win moves Canney one victory shy of tying the school record for wins in a season (33) and career (97). The one-hitter also marked her second in as many tournaments, as she tossed a one-hitter over Tennessee in last year’s series.

Northwestern moved to 51-11 on the year, breaking the school record for wins in a season, a mark that surpassed the previous best set by last year’s squad that finished as the national runner-up.

Arizona State fell to 54-16 overall as Katie Burkhart (35-12) suffered the loss. Burkhart surrendered a pair of runs on five hits with eight strikeouts in the complete-game effort.

The first of the two runs came in the bottom of the third as Kelly Dyer and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Darcy Sengewald. Lead-off batter Katie Logan then broke the scoreless tie as she doubled to right, scoring Dyer to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead.

Tammy Williams capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth as she launched her 15th home run of the season, a solo blast off the foul pole in left, which extended the NU lead to its final 2-0 margin. Williams’ blast continued an outstanding NCAA tournament for the slugger as she is improved her average to .550 (11-for-20) over the past couple of weeks.

The Wildcats face Washington tomorrow at 6 p.m. CDT. Arizona State will meet DePaul in the tournament’s first elimination game Saturday at 11 a.m. CDT.
