West Alabama infielder Shannon Goggins has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week for the week of April 11-17, it was announced by the association on Wednesday.

Goggins, a sophomore from Alabaster, Ala., registered a .514 (18-for-35) average last week in the Tigers' 10 games last week. She also delivered six home runs and 18 RBIs on the week.

"I am very excited for Shannon," said UWA coach Janet Montgomery. "This is the first time that I can remember one of our players receiving such an honor. She, no doubt, had a career week, and we certainly hope she can keep it up for the remainder of the season."

Goggins opened the week with a 3-for-4, three RBI performance against Belhaven. She delivered three home runs and seven RBIs in a 3-for-4 game with Southern Arkansas two days later. That performance set single-game records for home runs, total bases (12) and RBIs.

"I am honored to receive such a recognition," said Goggins. " I am very pleased with the way I swung the bat last week, but more importantly than that, we were able to win five games, including four conference games."

Registering at least one hit in nine of ten contests last week, Goggins' six homers surpassed the old school record of eight. She now has 13 on the season and now holds UWA's career home run record with 21 as a sophomore.
