LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The NFCA announced its 2018 High School Regional Coaching Staffs of the Year. Five prestigious programs from their respective NFCA regions were chosen for the honor.

This year’s winners – Cheshire High School (East), Keystone High School (North), North Davidson High School (South), Andover Central High School (South Central) and James Logan High School (West) – are now eligible for the national award, which will be announced on August 27.

East Region

Cheshire (Conn.) High School

Head Coach – Kristine Drust

Assistant Coaches –  Jaymie Sommers, Kat Vitale, Katie Strong, Kelly Hennessey

Guided a very young team that reached the Class LL state semifinals and finished 2018 with a 23-3 overall record... Senior class is winningest in program history… Drust will be inducted into the USA Softball of Connecticut Hall of Fame in October… Participated in eight to nine community service projects, including sponsoring a local family in need during the Christmas holiday.

North Region

Keystone High School (LaGrange, Ohio)
Head Coach
 – Jim Piazza
Assistant Coaches – Natalie Camp, Ann Green Doug Cooper, Don Metcalf, Chip Motolik, Reggie Hetsler

Put forth an undefeated season (34-0), culminating in a Ohio Division II State championship… Made its state record 17th appearance in the state finals… Finished season ranked fourth in the final USA Today Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 Poll.

South Region – North Davidson High School (Lexington, N.C.)

Assistant Coaches – Billy "Chief" Gerald, Lamar Powell, Shaundee Woosley, Robyn Stanek, Kristi Hogan Briles, Matt Boyles, Rodney Fulton, Tim Martin, Hudson Essick, Mike Stover, Mike Gray, David Donovant, Jeff Snider

First season under the direction of Berkley, following the passing of legendary Knights’ skipper and 2018 NFCA Hall of Fame inductee Mike Lambros… Guided program to a 25-4 mark, including 17-1 in Central Carolina Conference play… Reached the third round of the NCHSAA Class 2A state playoffs.

South Central Region 

Andover (Kan.) Central High School
Head Coach
 – Rita Frakes
Assistant Coaches – Patrick Huddleston, Hanna Mason, Karly Smith, Fred Martin

Steered Andover Central to a Class 4A-Division I state championship… The Jaguars upset the top three seeds, including previously undefeated Independence High School in the title game… It marked the second state title under Frakes, the first coming in 2009… The team and Frakes persevered throughout the season as she battled and beat stage three breast cancer only to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer after the season.

West Region 

James Logan High School (Union City, Calif.)
Head Coach
 – Teri Johnson
Assistant Coaches
 – Wendall Jones, Fernando Sanchez 

Recently retired Johnson guided Colts to a 19-5 overall record and 12-2 in Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL) play… In her 33-year coaching career, Johnson guided the Colts to 667 victories, 22 MVAL championships, including her final one in 2018, and five North Coast Section titles.
