LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Nova Southeastern’s Sydney Lageyre and Valdosta State’s Shayne O’Connell were named 2020 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II Player and Wilson/NFCA Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for their outstanding play during games played, March 2-8.

Lageyre helped the Sharks to a 6-0 week and extend their winning streak to 10 games through Sunday’s final contest. The speedy leadoff hit .632 (12-for-19) with a triple, 10 runs scored and 11 stolen bases. She recorded five multi-hit games, drove in four runs, walked twice and recorded a .636 on-base percentage. Lageyre, the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week, swiped at least one base in all six contests, including four in game one against Queens College (2-for-2, 3 R) and three in game two versus Lander. She posted a 3-for-3 outing against West Liberty and also scored twice in nightcaps versus the Hilltoppers and Knights, respectively.

O’Connell twirled her second straight no-hitter of the season with an 11-strikeout performance against Coker, who was 17-2 and receiving votes in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll. She finished the week, 2-0 with a 0.89 ERA and 24 strikeouts to just two walks. The Gulf South Conference (GSC) Pitcher of the Week surrendered just six hits, one for extra bases, and held her opposition to a .120 batting average. Over the weekend, O’Connell struck out 11 more batters in a complete-game effort in a GSC win over Lee.
